UPS

UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is a device designed to provide continuous power to connected equipment in the event of a power outage. It acts as a backup power source, ensuring that critical systems and devices can continue to operate without interruption.

An uninterruptible power supply or uninterruptible power source (UPS) is an electrical apparatus that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source or mains power fails.

A UPS differs from an auxiliary or emergency power system or standby generator in that it will provide near-instantaneous protection from input power interruptions, by supplying energy stored in batteries, supercapacitors, or flywheels. The on-battery run-time of most UPS systems is relatively short (only a few minutes) but sufficient to start a standby power source or properly shut down the protected equipment.

  • Operation: In normal operation, the load is directly connected to the mains power supply. When a power outage occurs, the UPS switches to battery backup.
  • Pros: Cost-effective and simple to install.
  • Cons: Can have a brief power interruption during the transfer time between mains and battery.
Online UPS

Online UPS protects your mission critical applications from downtime, data loss and corruption that inevitably hamper your productivity. The Online UPS range is designed to fit perfectly into any given environment where uninterrupted power feed is required to secure and ensure continuous operations.

  • Operation: The load is always supplied power through the UPS’s inverter, even when the mains power is available. The inverter converts the incoming AC power to DC, stores it in batteries, and then converts it back to AC for the load.
  • Pros: Provides continuous, clean power with zero transfer time, making it ideal for critical systems like servers and medical equipment.
  • Cons: More expensive and complex than offline UPS systems.

Both UPS and Online UPS types offer protection against power outages, but online UPS systems provide higher reliability and protection for critical applications. The choice between offline and online UPS depends on the user’s specific needs and budget.
